CHAPTER 4: LIE TO ME
Ezra
WHEN WE GET BACK to Elliot’s room, I’m a little nervous. We’d been out at Surge since 10 p.m., and now it was pushing 1 a.m. Elliot stumbles through the door first, and I follow right behind him, our mouths crashing together before the door is even fully shut.
Elliot’s room is lit only by the desk lamp near his bed, the rest of the space washed in shadows and soft amber light. There’s only one bed, so he doesn’t have a roommate. Good news, I suppose.
He can barely stand—not because he’s drunk, but because he’d been dancing like he was a backup dancer for a boy band for the last three hours straight. His face is flushed, hair damp with sweat, chest still rising hard beneath his shirt as he stumbles us through the small space like neither of us can stand being more than a few inches apart.
And honestly, maybe we can’t.
Every time I try to create even the smallest amount of distance between us, he closes it immediately. Another kiss. Another hand on my waist. Fingers hooking into my belt loops like he’s afraid I might disappear if he lets go for too long.
He kisses me again before finally pulling back, presumably to breathe.
“Man, that was incredible,” he says. “You’ve got some good moves.”
“Lying will get you nowhere mister,” I say.
His smile is mesmerizing, and I can’t stop staring at him. The way he makes me feel—like I can do anything—like I’m on top of the world.
We fall onto the bed, him on top of me, and as we kiss, we roll across the mattress, kissing and groping one another like we’re trying to make up for every second we spent dancing instead of doing this.
“Hyde—how are you real?” he asks.
And the moment the words come out of his mouth, my heart sinks.
Because Hyde isn’t real.
And for all I know, neither is this moment.
He must notice the expression on my face because his reaction is almost immediate.
“Hey, is everything okay?”
I try and course correct but a part of me already knows I fucked up.
