But when the line between act and instinct disappears,
the mission isn’t the only thing at risk.

I STOOD BAREFOOT IN the kitchen, the cold marble tile biting into the soles of my feet. Nathan was in the shower, water thrumming against the stone walls behind the closed bathroom door. I kept one ear tuned to it as I opened my burner phone and dialed the secure line.

It rang once.

“Go,” Maya said.

“I’m clear. He’s in the shower.”
