I STOOD UNDER THE SPRAY of the shower, water pounding down on the back of my neck like it could rinse the doubt out of me. It couldn’t. I’d known that the second I stepped in. The heat barely touched the chill coiled in my gut.

AS THE PLANE PREPARED for final descent, I excused myself to the bathroom with the satellite phone tucked into my waistband. I shut the door behind me, locked it, and pulled the small device free, thumbing the power button until it blinked to life.
The signal was faint but steady. I brought it to my ear.
“Go for Maya,” came her voice after one ring.
“I’ve got a few minutes,” I said. “Give me the mission rundown.”
