THE CONGRESSMAN'S SON – ACT II, PART VI: PART VI: THE UNRAVELING

CHAPTER ELEVEN: THE UNRAVELING

ARMY NAVY COUNTRY CLUB
Seven Corners, Virginia

The private conference room was sealed tight, its windows blacked out to keep the rest of the world at bay. Carter stood beside the table, laptop still open to the headline. Adrian hadn’t moved since he saw the images—he was pale, hunched forward, hands pressed together like he could hold the world in place if he just gripped hard enough.

Carter shut the laptop and exhaled through his nose. “Blake’s on his way,” he said finally. “And when he gets here, things are going to get dicey.”

Adrian’s eyes flicked up. “Dicey how?”

“Depends which version of him walks through that door.” Carter straightened his tie, his tone clinical. “If he’s in control, we might still have a path out. If he’s not—we improvise.”

Adrian swallowed, voice thin. “Is there any way out of this?”

Carter studied him a moment. “There’s no clean way. But there’s a story we can tell.”

Adrian looked lost. “A story?”

Carter nodded once. “The photos were stolen from a compromised campaign server. You were targeted—someone wanted leverage. We control the narrative before the Bureau or the press does. You keep quiet, disappear for a few days. I’ll coordinate statements from the comms team and have Legal draft language to make it look like a breach.”

Adrian’s head was spinning. “You think anyone’s going to believe that?”

“I don’t need them to believe it,” Carter said. “I need them to doubt what they’re seeing long enough for the next headline to replace it.”

He stepped closer, voice lowering. “When Blake gets here, don’t speak unless I tell you to. Whatever you think this is about—it isn’t anymore. It’s not about what’s true. It’s about what’s survivable.”

The door handle clicked.

Adrian’s breath caught.

Carter didn’t move.

“Showtime,” he murmured.
