The room was empty except for two men hunched over a workstation in the corner. Carson Slater stood with his arms folded tight, eyes fixed on the monitor. Malik sat at the keyboard, jaw set, fingers moving quick and precise as lines of code and error messages stacked across the screen.

“Try again,” Carson said.

Malik already had. The flash drive mounted, the video played crisp in high resolution—but every attempt to move it, to copy it, to attach it to an email, ended in failure. The system spat back permissions errors, dead file paths, corrupted transfers. It was like the thing had been hardwired to stay put.

“Won’t upload,” Malik muttered. “Won’t copy, won’t burn. Locked tighter than anything I’ve seen outside government.”

Carson swore under his breath. “Then we record it. Screen capture. Something.”
